FOR THE LOVE OF THE SEA

(beaches, canyons, and the slow breath of nature)

«A city, a mosaic of experiences, sports, and nature. You can draw your dreams on a turquoise slate, with the tip of a foil blade. You can climb rocks, explore ancient canyons and hiking trails, on foot or two wheels, alone or as a team: each step weaves a thread of joy».

Life in Modica doesn’t go by the clock. Rather, it’s made of light, wind, the scent of salt and wild mint. You leave the stone for the sand, the stairways for the country roads, the curves of the Baroque for the waves of the sea. It’s time for relaxation. But not picture-perfect relaxation: it’s an invitation to slow down, to play, to immerse yourself, to challenge yourself. Your experience begins where the city meets the sea: Marina di Modica. It’s the Blue Flag beach of the Modicans, who traditionally move there after the festival of San Pietro. The coastal town boasts a golden strip of fine sand, a discreet marina, a seafront promenade perfect for sunset strolls, and a piazza that opens onto the sea like a wide smile. Continuing east, you reach Maganuco, a wilder place, often caressed by the wind, making it the perfect destination for windsurfing, surfing, kiteboarding, sup, and sailing. Among the dunes, the scents of mastic, broom, and wild figs waft through. The coast is home to an open and relaxing horizon, to people running on the beach, to books read under the umbrella.

But the sea is only one side of Modica’s soul. Head inland to find yourself immersed in one of the most striking landscapes in southeastern Sicily: Cava d’Ispica. A 13-kilometer-long green canyon, inhabited since prehistoric times. Here, nature and archaeology merge. Among limestone cliffs and paths winding through almond and carob trees, you’ll encounter cave villages, necropolises, catacombs, oratories, and small churches carved into the rock. Not to be missed: the Cava Archaeological Park, with its “Larderia” (400 Byzantine tombs), the church of San Pancrati, the Greek gymnasium, and the remains of a medieval village. You can explore it slowly on foot or by bike. Guides also offer experiential tours, night hikes, and meditative walking days. Like the one that unfolds among the vegetable gardens and flowery groves of the Baravitalla Garden, where time slows: petals, leaves, stillness, and the song of birds mingling with the scent of flowers. Further north, Cava dei Servi opens up, lesser-known but equally enchanting. Carved by the Tellesimo stream, it houses a Bronze Age dolmen, a megalithic jewel immersed in greenery. Here, nature has a voice: it sings with the resident birds, whispers with the wind among the carob trees, and is reflected in the seasonal streams.

And if you ask for greenery in the city? Modica responds with a network of urban parks designed for daily well-being. The newest and largest is the Basile Urban Park, in the Vignazza neighborhood, on the road connecting Modica Bassa to Modica Alta: not only a green lung open to all, but also an educational trail that hosts social activities, sports, events, walks, and children’s play areas. A 400-meter loop welcomes runners and walkers, a skateboard and rollerblading track entices the more adventurous, an amphitheater, a children’s play area, and a synthetic grass soccer field invite social gatherings, while families can picnic among olive trees, pine trees, and shaded areas. In the Modica Sorda neighborhood, Villa Silla welcomes children and families, who—taking the road toward Piano Ceci—can also gather in the Mangiagesso recreation area, a place of hilly beauty where nature and humanity have coexisted for years. Beneath the canopies of Mediterranean pines and cypresses, there are tables and benches, fountains and restrooms that make this park ideal for excursions, trekking, picnics and outings.

Finally, the Garden of the Righteous in the park of San Giuseppe u Timpuni honors our memory: trees planted in the name of those who chose justice, like Felicia Impastato, mother of anti-mafia martyr Peppino. An area where hope flourishes, and where strolls along its paths become an inner journey, a reflection on the common good, an invitation to sow courage.

Modica is also like that: it questions you to restore your pulse and rhythm. To remind you how beautiful it feels to breathe slowly. To learn to stop without feeling guilty.
